Drinking a glass of milk every day can reduce the risk of bowel cancer by up to 14%, reveals a study carried out on women.
An observational study of more than half a million middle-aged or older European women concluded that drinking 200 grams of milk a day can reduce the risk of colon cancer and rectal cancer by up to 14%.
These women filled out a form providing details about their diet in order to carry out the investigation, which considered 97 dietary choices to see if any of them influenced the likelihood of developing bowel cancer, one of the most common among men and women.
And the result of , published in Nature on January 8, was that women who consume more dairy products, such as yogurt, cheese or other dairy products, are less likely to contract this disease, explains .
But better than milk is, in general, calcium. THE Consuming 300 grams of calcium reduces the risk of cancer by 17%that is, three percentage points more than milk. In addition to the most obvious foods — dairy products — this substance is also present in soybeans, some nuts such as almonds or walnuts, or even sardines or mussels.
“Although this study highlights a potential benefit of increasing calcium in the diet, journalists and the public should approach the results with caution”, warns, however, the doctor David Nunan.
“The numbers presented may overestimate the true effect due to methodological limitations. More solid research is neededsuch as randomized controlled trials, to establish causality”, he adds.
