Rhinovirus is the main responsible for cases in children and adolescents; Sars-CoV-2 affects more elderly people

The da indicates a sign of decline in cases of (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) in long-term (last 6 weeks) and short-term (last 3 weeks) trends.

However, there are signs of growth in the long-term trend in 5 States: Alagoas, Paraíba, Acre, Rondônia and Roraima. The rhinovirus remains the main responsible for SARS cases in children and adolescents up to 14 years of age in recent weeks, while Sars-CoV-2 (covid-19) predominates among the elderly.

According to Fiocruz, the average weekly incidence of SARS due to Covid-19 in recent weeks has had a greater impact on young children and the elderly, while mortality has been higher among elderly people aged 65 and over. “In the state of Ceará, the increase in Covid-19 cases already noted in previous bulletins continues, especially among young people and adults, with signs of a slowdown among the elderly”, says researcher Tatiana Portella, from the Scientific Computing Program at Fiocruz and coordinator of InfoGripe.

The researcher reports that the increase in SARS cases among elderly people in several states in the Northeast (Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte, Sergipe and Maranhão), and in the North (Amazonas, Acre, Pará and Rondônia) suggests a possible association with Covid- 19. “However, the laboratory data available to date in these states is still insufficient to establish a more precise association”, explains Tatiana. The Bulletin also records that in Alagoas and Roraima the scenario is still fluctuating, but suggests attention due to the increase in Covid-19 cases in many states in the North and Northeast regions.

The prevalence of positive cases, in the last four epidemiological weeks, was distributed as follows: 7.7% were influenza A; 4.9% were influenza B; 13% were respiratory syncytial virus (RSV); 26.9% were rhinovirus; and 41.3% were Sars-CoV-2. Among deaths, the prevalence among positive cases was 7.4% for influenza A; 5.6% for influenza B; 0.9% for RSV; 9.7% for rhinovirus; and 74.1% for Sars-CoV-2.
