Gymnast Arthur Zanetti, 34, announced his retirement from the sport. The announcement was made on the program Esporte Espetacular, on TV Globo, this Sunday (12).
The athlete, who was a gold medalist at the London Olympics in 2012 and took silver in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, said he would like to continue competing. Your body, however, can no longer support it.
“The end point has come in my career as an athlete. For me, I would continue much longer, but you have to have good sense, both mind and body. I decided, it’s difficult, to put an end to this part of being an athlete because I wanted to, but the body is speaking, and I will respect it, because I don’t want other injuries, I don’t want to become an elderly person who practically can’t get out of bed because of pain”, he stated.
After two Olympic medal appearances, Zanetti was still at the Tokyo Games in 2021. In 2024, he was unable to compete in the Paris Games because of an injury to his left arm, which was operated on in May. The previous year, he had already been out of the World Cup due to shoulder pain.
The Olympic champion should not, however, abandon the sport. He was invited by the club where he trained, in São Caetano do Sul, in São Paulo, to become a teacher and coach.
