Instead of buying it, grow it in your apartment. A gardener explains how to grow mushrooms

You want to have fresh, organic mushrooms at your fingertipsbut you live in a block of flats and unfortunately you don’t have any forest nearby where you could collect them? Don’t worry. You can grow them yourself, even if you don’t have a plot of land.

This is not a joke at all. All you need to do is decide to grow mushrooms, which are not demanding. A gardener friend recently explained to us how to grow them step by step. He also revealed when to pick mushrooms.

Mushrooms are a treasure trove of vitamins. They are rich in protein and have a rich composition (contain vitamins: A, D, B vitamins, folic acid, potassium, iron, calcium, sodium, zinc, copper, iodine, fluorine, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus).

However, they differ from most forest mushrooms, such as boletes, saffron mushrooms or butter mushrooms, which require the company of an appropriate plant to developbecause they enter into a symbiotic relationship.

It is classified as a saprotrophic fungi that do not need it at all (because they obtain energy from dead organic matter). Thanks to this, it can be quickly grown in the garden (in a shaded place), as well as in a greenhouse, garage, basement or even in a pot on the windowsill.

There is a place for growing mushrooms in every apartment, and you can do it regardless of the season. It is enough that the temperature in the room where mushrooms are grown is between 14 and 25 degrees Celsius.

How to grow mushrooms at home? There are several options. You can use plastic bags or flower pots for this purpose (wooden or plastic boxes). The easiest option is to buy ready-made substrate for growing mushrooms online or in a gardening store. It is already inoculated with mycelium.

A gardener friend recommends kits for growing mushrooms at home, which usually contain both substrates inoculated with mushroom mycelium and a bag of soil.. They almost always come with instructions, which is a huge help for people who are just starting their adventure with planting mushrooms.

When you purchase a kit for growing mushrooms at home, open the package and cover the substrate with mycelium with the included soil. Water the substrate with a small amount of water just to moisten it and put the cover on(if included) to provide the mushrooms with conditions like in a mini greenhouse.

If it’s not there, then nothing should happen either. Mushrooms will probably need to be moistened with water every day. After 10 days you should notice a white coating on the substrate (mycelium). Spread it evenly over the entire substrate with a rake or fork.

If possible, lower the temperature in the room to about 17-18 degrees Celsius so that the fungi can develop in a cooler environment. Every other day, check the humidity of the substrate by lifting the lid.

The first mushrooms will appear after 3-4 weeks. When their covers under the caps peel off slightly, you can remove them from the pot. Be careful not to damage other, smaller mushrooms when picking.
