Police arrest suspect of attack on MST settlement – 01/11/2025 – Power

The São Paulo Civil Police reported that they arrested this Saturday (11) a man suspected of having participated in a settlement in Tremembé (SP) that left two dead and six injured.

According to the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat, the suspect, identified as the intellectual mastermind of the crime, is known as “Nero do Piseiro” and had already been convicted of illegal possession of a firearm. His name was not released by the department.

The man was recognized by witnesses who saw the criminals arriving at the scene in cars and motorcycles and moments later they shot, according to the ministry.

According to G1, the Taubaté sectional delegate, Marcos Ricardo Parra, stated in a press conference that the arrested man is 41 years old and is identified as the person who led the attack, this Friday (10). He would have been identified by victims who are hospitalized and by witnesses.

The motivation, according to the SSP, would have been a disagreement over the negotiation of land within the settlement area.

Eight people were hit and taken to the Taubaté Regional Hospital and the Tremembé Emergency Room, according to information from the MST, the Ministry of Agrarian Development and the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat.

Two did not survive their injuries: Valdir do Nascimento and Gleison Barbosa. The surviving victims were shot in the feet, hands and back, according to Gilmar Mauro.

Also according to the leader, the settlement suffers invasion attempts due to the real estate expansion in the region. “It’s a announced tragedy, we’ve already contacted the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Justice Department, but nothing happened,” says Mauro.

According to him, the attack was preceded by a first encounter, in which residents expelled an invader from the area. The settlers then gathered in the same place, in an attempt to stop a new invasion, and were shot by an armed group.

The case was registered as murder, attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm permitted for use on duty at the Taubaté Sectional Police Station. A man was approached at the scene and charged with illegal possession of a weapon.

The settlement has 690 hectares – around 960 football pitches – and has been regularized by Incra (National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform) since December 2005. 52 families live in the area.

Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) and the Secretary of Public Security, Guilherme Derrite, have not yet commented on the episode.
