Nova Iguaçu x Vasco: how it was
Despite it being the beginning of the season, both teams started making very strong marks, offering little space for more incisive actions. However, the visitors lost steam and Vasco took the opportunity to impose themselves in the match, mainly using plays on the flanks.
It was in one of these, in the 39th minute, that Cruz-Maltino opened the scoring in São Januário. After putting pressure on Nova Iguaçu’s exit, Bruno Lopez invaded from the right and crossed hard into the small area. The ball fell to full-back Paulinho Silva, one of the highlights of the first stage, to score the goal.
At the beginning of the 2nd half, in the 5th minute, Gabriel Pinheiro kicked at the edge of the Vasco area and the ball hit Paulinho’s hand. Initially, the penalty was awarded, however, after review by VAR, the penalty was revoked.
Without a penalty, Nova Iguaçu finally managed to equalize in the 17th minute, after Sidney headed in a corner taken from the left.
During the game, it was Nova Iguaçu who took possession of the ball and created the best chances, mainly via set pieces. Vasco, disorganized on the field, was unable to offer resistance and balance its actions. At the same time, the visitor is also unable to create really dangerous actions to seek a turnaround.
