The Court of Auditors of the Municipality of São Paulo sent a letter to the City of São Paulo last Friday (10) asking for explanations about recent flooding that occurred at the Pacaembu stadium, in the central region of the city. The document also requests information about possible damage to the works and what measures have been taken.
The letter mentions that heavy rains caused the cancellation of the Favelas Cup final, which would have taken place on December 21st at the newly opened stadium. According to the document, the objective of the questioning is to avoid similar problems in the final of the São Paulo Junior Football Cup, scheduled for January 25th.
According to the document, the city hall has up to 5 working days to send you a response with the following information:
- If the cause of flooding in the Pacaembu Complex has been diagnosed;
- If any damage was found in the stadium works and if there is a need for any intervention;
- What measures were adopted to avoid future flooding of the Pacaembu Complex?
In a statement, the Municipal Department of Sports and Leisure stated that “the delays have already been identified and the respective sanctions, according to the concession contract, will be applied after the final acceptance of the mandatory works”.
“A new inspection was carried out on December 9th, and the technical report is being prepared. Other inspections may be carried out”, says the ministry
Regarding the flooding episodes recorded in the videos, the explanation given by the secretariat and the Concessionaire is that “a pipe broke due to water pressure and the necessary repairs are already at an advanced stage”.
Also according to the secretariat, all investment made in Pacaembu is the responsibility of the Allegra concessionaire, at no cost to the municipality.
In a note sent to CNNthe concessionaire stated that “the flooding of part of the pitch occurred after the rupture of a rainwater pipe that receives contributions from neighboring neighborhoods and passes through the stadium, towards the Charles Miller Square swimming pool”.
“The incident was caused by the heavy volume of debris and rubble brought by the storms that began on December 21st, causing multiple disruptions throughout the city of São Paulo, and lasting until the end of the year.”
The company highlights that “city hall bodies were informed of the incident from the first moment and, as soon as the rains at the end of the year allowed, the concessionaire removed the debris and carried out the repairs”.
“The completion of this intervention took place in a few days, and the site is now undergoing floor adjustments on the East promenade of the Stadium, all within a safe schedule for the 2025 Copinha final”, he concluded.
