The Court accepted this Sunday (12) the request for temporary arrest of a second suspect involved in the (Landless Workers Movement) in Tremembé, São Paulo.
The action left two dead and six injured, one of them seriously.
and Gleison Barbosa, killed in the attack, were buried this Sunday. Ministers Paulo Teixeira (Agrarian Development) and Macaé Evaristo (Human Rights).
The arrest request was made by the São Paulo Civil Police, which is investigating the case, and is trying to find the second suspect, whose name has not been revealed.
On Saturday, to a man known as Nero do Piseiro. He is identified by the investigation as the intellectual mastermind of the crime. The motivation, according to the Civil Police, was a disagreement over the negotiation of land in the settlement area.
The Minister of Agrarian Development said that the attack was motivated by a land dispute.
“[Os atiradores] wanted to subtract a lot, they [os assentados] they went to defend the lot. This happened at five in the afternoon. At eight o’clock at night, this group of vandals arrived and shot, killing two of the settlers”, said Teixeira in an interview in Tremembé.
According to the Civil Police, Nero do Piseiro was recognized by witnesses who saw the perpetrators of the attack arriving at the scene. He will be detained for at least 30 days. The defense could not be reached to comment.
The case was registered as murder, attempted murder and illegal possession of a permitted firearm.
A third man was arrested by the São Paulo Military Police for illegal possession of a firearm, but his connection with the crime was discarded — he had gone to the scene to help the victims.
MST coordinator, Gilmar Mauro said that the target region of the attack is an area with many settlements close to urban areas.
“Therefore, they became the reason for the rage of local real estate capital. First, invading areas of forest reserves and then lots within settlements with the aim of transforming these into areas for condominiums, for real estate speculation”, he stated.
In addition to one member of the MST who is hospitalized in serious condition, four others of the injured underwent surgery and are not at risk of death. One of those sent to hospital was discharged on Saturday.
