Coridoce, a forum that represents most of the municipalities affected by the (MG), has recommended that the group’s mayors wait until the day before the deadline to decide whether to oppose BHP in the London court.

The deadline for municipalities to adhere to the agreement in Brazil ends on March 6th. Coridoce has therefore recommended that no decision be made until the 5th.

As predicted by the agreement between mining companies and state and federal governments, those affected who join the agreement need to renounce actions in the country and abroad that demand responsibility from companies.

The waiting recommendation is based on the assessment that the resources arising from a decision contrary to BHP would be , which still provides for payment in installments over 20 years.

The British, however, has an uncertain fate, and both mining companies and the Brazilian government believe that the renegotiation already signed takes away the strength of actions against companies abroad.

To date, 12 of the 49 municipalities in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo included in the agreement have signed up — abroad.

The trial will resume this Monday (13) after a period of recess. The new phase will begin with hearings with experts in Brazilian environmental law.

The British firm Pogust Goodhead, which it claims to represent, is asking for compensation that could reach R$260 billion — the agreement in Brazil was for R$170 billion.

The expectation is that on March 5th, the day before the deadline for adhering to the renegotiation, the trial will be in the phase of presentation of final arguments by both parties, the last stage of the process before the sentence, which should be presented in mid-2025.

The next step, if BHP is convicted, would be to determine the amount of compensation for each litigant.
