The president () criticized, this Monday (13), a mother who gives a cell phone to a child stops crying, instead of welcoming him.

“I’ve seen a case of a two-year-old child starting to cry and instead of the mother picking it up so that the comfort of her body could make the child stop crying, she simply gives the cell phone to the child,” he said.

“It’s something cold, icy, it has nothing to do with it, it won’t educate. This inhumane behavior is being used by humans,” he added.

The statement was made during a speech at an event to sanction the bill that prohibits the use of cell phones in schools across the country.

Lula also told of a time when he saw a couple of teenagers, aged 14 or 15, who were sitting in front of each other, making out on their cell phones.

“I took the phone away from both of them and [falei] Talk while looking at each other, you’ll see if it’s not much more beautiful, interactive than standing in front of each other, without holding each other’s hand. Just with your hand on your cell phone,” he said.

“Human beings were born to live looking at each other’s faces, to play. Because we are made of a chemical reaction that has to involve looking, hugging, holding hands.”

The sanction took place in a closed event, but broadcast on the internet, with ministers and parliamentarians at the Palácio do Planalto. The text will still be published in the Official Gazette of the Union, but according to the government it will not have vetoes.

The proposal was approved symbolically (without counting votes in the panel) in December. The restriction on cell phone use in schools gained traction after the change.

The federal government’s expectation, at the end of the year, was to put the PL into practice at the beginning of the school year.
