Once an indispensable giant in the world of mobile phones, Nokia fell behind in the late 2000s. At first, the market for touchscreen cell phones was only belatedly ventured into. They often relied on half-baked in-house solutions, while Apple’s iPhones and the first generations of Android cell phones experienced massive growth in popularity. Finally, Microsoft took pity and bought the Finnish company’s cell phone division for 5.4 billion euros. With the established name, they were intended to help Windows Phone (later Windows 10 Mobile) become the third player in the market for smartphone operating systems.
