PSP clarifies police operation in Martim Moniz

Luís Carrilho guaranteed that the PSP practices “are the best worldwide and at European level”. Speaking to journalists at the end of the opening ceremony of the judicial year, Luís Carrilho assured that the PSP practices “are the best worldwide and at European level”.

“The police respect the constitution and the law. And they do everything they can to ensure that people live in freedom and safety,” he added.

“In a democratic rule of law, no one is above the law and we, PSP, in democracy are the most supervised institution in Portugalbut also the institution that has the responsibility of the majority of the population“, said Luís Carrilho.

The operation carried out in December 2024 resulted in numerous criticisms of the PSP’s actions on that street, where dozens of immigrants were forced to stay leaning against the wall with their hands in the air for more than an hour.

Regarding this episode of violence, the national director of the PSP simply said that “people, when in need, as was the case yesterday, They go to the police to ask for help.”

According to information provided this Monday morning by subintendent Iuri Rodrigues, commander of the 1st division of the PSP in Lisbon, the PSP is investigating the causes of the disorder.

According to the subintendent, “there was some violence”, with “broken teeth, attacks with a knife on the leg and stomach, cuts on the head”caused by a knife, but also “metallic objects”.

The police reinforced its presence in the Martim Moniz areasomething that the commander said was already planned, as in other areas of the city, such as Mercado de Arroios and Bairro Alto.

“There is proximity policing on Rua do Benformoso and Mouraria and we will be here every day,” he said.
