Rain leaves 11 dead in Ipatinga

According to Mayor Gustavo Nunes (PL), the city was hit by a waterspout during the early hours of this Monday (13th January)

Landslides and heavy rains caused the death of at least 11 people in Ipatinga, a municipality located east of Minas Gerais, during the early hours of this Monday (13.Jan.2024). Among the victims, 5 were from the same family.

According to the mayor (PL), during the early hours of Monday, the city was hit by a waterspout. The meteorological phenomenon caused 80 millimeters of precipitation in 1 hour. Several areas of Ipatinga were flooded.

“It’s a very large volume of water in a short space of time. Ravines gave way, avenues were blocked, a lot of mud spread and houses were flooded. The UPA also flooded, and we have teams working”said Nunes.

According to G1, at least 150 people are homeless. The city of Ipatinga declared a State of Public Calamity for 180 days and adapted the Ipatinga stadium as a temporary shelter.

On social media, the governor of Minas Gerais, stated that he was following the meteorological emergency and made the State available for the necessary help. “The rescue work continues, led by the Fire Department. The State is fully at your disposal. During this rainy season, look for safe places”these Zema.
