He won’t be a great singer anymore, but that doesn’t matter. Passionate imperfection is preferable to the smooth face of plain perfection. Just think of Hasil Adkins, one of the most famous mistakes in music history. With his ear to the radio, he thought that the stars singing and playing on it were solely responsible for the music. He didn’t imagine that there were three or four others playing music behind the singers mentioned. He wanted to be able to do that too. So he put together a place in the backcountry of West Virginia in the 1950s that allowed him to single-handedly play drums and guitar at the same time. He sang, whistled, grunted and yodeled while the horses from the stable flew around his ears. A big one.
