Strong wind expected to worsen fires in Los Angeles early this week

An ongoing and persistent Santa Ana wind event is unfolding in Southern California, where red flag warnings are in effect through Wednesday, including the Palisades, Hurst and Eaton fires.

Find out what firefighters expect this week:

Monday: Winds are expected to increase throughout the day and could gust between 72 and 88 km/h. That wind placed nearly eight million people under critical fire weather conditions, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

Tuesday: Winds were expected to peak in the morning until Wednesday at noon local time, when the National Weather Service issued red flag “Particularly Dangerous Situation” warnings for parts of the country.

These alerts include the Hurst Fire and are close to, but do not include, the Palisades and Eaton Fires. While not as severe as last week, winds can still gust between 72 and 112 km/h

What does this mean for fires?

These strong winds will combine with very dry air and continued drought to worsen conditions for firefighters struggling to contain the outbreaks.

There is a chance of “extremely critical” fire weather, the highest level, to be issued by the forecast center for parts of Ventura County on Tuesday.
