California Governor Gavin Newsom told CNN that it could take six to nine months to clear the debris from the fires.

The number of confirmed victims of large-scale fires that have plagued the agglomeration of the American city of Los Angeles for almost a week rose to 24 on Sunday. Eight dead were found in the area where the Palisades Fire is raging, the remaining 16 in the area of the Eaton Fire. Without further details, the local coroner’s office announced this on Sunday, reports TASR with reference to the AFP agency.

California Governor Gavin Newsom told CNN that it could take six to nine months to clear the debris from the fires. An inspection of all affected buildings is currently underway, which should be completed within two weeks.

Each house will be photographed in the coming days and the images will be published on the website. According to him, this will allow residents to obtain information about the condition of properties without having to travel to currently inaccessible areas. Photos will also be useful when contacting insurance companies.

Newsom said that the widespread use of electric cars and related infrastructure complicates the recovery of the aftermath of the fires, as the remains of the batteries must be disposed of professionally.

On Tuesday, five large fires broke out in the vicinity of Los Angeles, fanned by strong winds. According to current information, more than 12,000 buildings were destroyed or damaged. Firefighters, despite enormous efforts, were still unable to bring them under control, including the largest rampage in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood.

In the meantime, billionaire Elon Musk announced on his platform X, according to the DPA agency, that he wants to offer free internet through the Starlink satellite system in the areas affected by the fires in Los Angeles. Powering the receiving devices will be provided by Cybertruck electric cars from Tesla, which Musk heads.
