In a battle lasting almost four hours, Brazilian Thiago Wild ended his participation in the Australian Open in the early hours of Monday (13) by being eliminated in the first round of the tournament by Hungarian Fabian Marozsan by 3 sets to 2, partial of 6/3, 6/7 (5/7), 7/5, 5/7 and 7/5 in 3h57 of confrontation.

The game was marked by balance from start to finish and the Paraná native (79th) saw his chance to triumph in his debut slip away in the details. With the exception of the first partial, all sets had at least twelve games.

With the defeat, Wild repeats last year’s script in the Australian Grand Slam. In 2024, when he participated in the main draw of the competition for the first time, he stopped against Andrey Rublev (who will be João Fonseca’s debut opponent) and also fell by a score of 3 sets to 2 against the Russian. On Sunday, another Brazilian was eliminated in the first round. Thiago Monteiro fell to the Japanese Kei Nishikori.

In the game, the Hungarian took advantage by breaking the Brazilian’s serve in the sixth game and closed the first set at 6/3. The two had the same serve usage (67%), but Marozsan had one more winner (8 to 7) and one less unforced error (6 to 7).

In the second set, Wild had to overcome themselves. After seeing his rival open a 4-2 gap, he won three straight games and returned the break. The duel was fierce until the 11th game, when the Brazilian gained the upper hand and tied the match.

The next two disputes were also defined in detail. Marozsan took advantage of the Brazilian’s mistakes and came back ahead, closing the third set at 7/5. In the fourth half, the Hungarian had the chance to define the match, but saw Wild react and return the score, tying the match at 2-2.

The fifth set featured an atmosphere of tension on the part of the two tennis players, who confirmed their serves throughout the decisive part. The Hungarian rival, however, ended up being more cool at the end: he broke Thiago’s serve in the 12th game and closed the game 3-2, establishing a 7/5.
