A delegation of coalition MPs led by Andrej Danko from SNS and Tibor Gašpar from Smer started the first day of their official trip in Moscow today. Members of the delegation met with the chairman of the Russian Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, who is on the sanctions lists of the European Union.

The topic of their discussions was mainly the establishment of friendly relations.

“We want to build our relations based on the trust we have in the Russian Federation. In fact, it must be said that Russia managed to overcome various challenges under the leadership of the president (Vladimir Putin, editor’s note). And that’s why we respect the Russian Federation,” Danko declared after the meeting with Volodin, according to the Duma website.

A visit as a link to Europe

Tibor Gašpar, who considers the visit a signal to other leaders of the European Union member states, was similarly friendly. “We are a member of the EU, but we are trying to protect our national-state interests. And this should serve as a certain signal for other European countries and their leaders. It means that we have to negotiate, we have to listen to each other, because only through this we can find a solution. And this visit is such a first sign,” Tibor Gašpar said after the meeting, saying that he wants to develop relations in the fields of economy, sports, and culture, and would like to strengthen international security together with Russia.

At the meeting, Volodin recalled Prime Minister Robert Fico’s recent trip to Russian President Putin, where he was supposed to discuss gas and peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, which could take place in Slovakia. Fico declared on Sunday that he was not in Russia on business.

Volodin declared that the meeting was “extremely important” in the context of the recent talks between Putin and Fico. “Several very important decisions have been made,” he said, adding that it is now necessary to secure their legislative support from the deputies. It is not clear from the text what important decisions he was talking about.

Volodin is building a multipolar world

Among other things, he used the joint statement to communicate that Russia is working to build a multipolar world.

“Our country is in favor of building a multipolar world order. We must do everything to ensure that citizens have the opportunity to decide their future, and this is only possible with the help of a sovereign state. When building relations, we adhere to the principles of mutual cooperation and the absence of double standards,” declared Volodin.

The Slovak delegation arrived in Moscow on Sunday, January 12. He returns on Wednesday, January 15. In addition to Danek and Gašpar, it also includes Smer MPs Marián Kéry, Richard Glück and Ján Mažgút and Adam Lučanský from the SNS. The opposition did not participate in the trip.

They traveled to Russia as an official delegation of the National Council. Acting Speaker of the Parliament Peter Žiga from Smer approved their trip. The total cost of the trip is 19,000 euros.

The plane’s route caught my eye

Their arrival in Moscow was marginally noticed by the Russian media on Sunday. This happened mainly thanks to the report of the state agency TASS, which reported yesterday afternoon that the deputy speaker of the parliament had arrived. Through the agency, the message was then spread to other media.

The Life.ru portal added to the report that Slovak President Peter Pellegrini refused to travel to Kyiv due to the gas situation, and recalled Prime Minister Fico’s statement that Moscow had always followed agreements, while Kyiv proved to be an unreliable partner.

Along with the information about the arrival of the Slovak delegation, Moscow also noticed the news that the Slovak government special had to bypass Poland. They informed about it based on the words of Andrej Danko, who said that the Poles had forbidden them to fly through their territory.

Poland responded to the issue by saying that they did not ban anything, but the Slovaks provided incomplete documents. When they asked for a supplement, they received information about a change of flight route instead.

The head of the Ministry of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, assured during a press conference on Sunday that Polish-Slovak relations are at a good level. “As for the direction of flights, I recommend flights to Warsaw, not to Moscow,” he added.

Minister of the Interior Matúš Šutaj Eštok believes that the visit of the parliamentary delegation to Moscow will have some significance for Slovakia. The same is said about the planned trip of several members of Hlas to Kyiv. “I believe that both in Moscow and in Kyiv they will say something,” he declared.

The leader of Hlas did not comment on the outputs of Andrej Danko from Moscow on social networks. “I really don’t have time to watch Andrej Danko,” he added.
