The fires claimed at least 24 lives.
On Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi offered help in fighting forest fires in the American city of Los Angeles and said that Ukrainian firefighters can “help save American lives”, TASR reports, according to an AFP report.
On Tuesday, five large fires broke out in the vicinity of Los Angeles, fanned by strong winds. The fires claimed at least 24 lives in less than a week. More than 12,000 buildings were destroyed or damaged. Firefighters warn that due to strong winds, the situation could worsen and the flames could move from existing burning areas to new areas, writes AFP.
On Sunday evening, Zelenskyi said on the X social network that he had ordered Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and diplomats to “prepare the possible participation of our rescuers in the fight against forest fires in California”. He described the situation in the American city as very difficult.
“Coordination is currently underway and we have offered assistance to the American side through the appropriate channels. One hundred and fifty of our firefighters are already ready,” the Ukrainian president added.
The United States, under the leadership of outgoing President Joe Biden, is the biggest supporter of Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion. Since the start of the war in February 2022, they have provided military aid worth more than $65 billion, AFP recalls.
