Climate of tension and reinforced security in Maputo for the President’s inauguration

The Mozambican capital is experiencing days of high tension, marked by the strike called by Venâncio Mondlane, which coincides with the inauguration of deputies and the President of the Republic. Closed shops, deserted streets and a strong security apparatus is the scenario described by Paulo Julião, Lusa delegate in Mozambique.

Today is the second day of the strike called by which coincides with the and the President, tomorrow January 15th. Although the scenario is one of relative calm, due to the lack of usual movement in the city, the feeling of alert is palpable, reports Paulo Julião, Lusa delegate in Mozambique.

“Today, like yesterday, there is no transport operating. Commerce and services are closed and there is very little movement”

On Avenida Accords in Lusaka, about two kilometers from Parliament, the dark stain of burned tires during the outbreaks of conflict recorded yesterday is still visible, describes the journalist, referring to the atmosphere of latent tension, with a police apparatus on alert.

“The rapid intervention unit is a few meters away, equipped with tear gas, ready to stop any demonstration in the first moments.”

Tomorrow, January 15th, the environment should be similar, with even more rigorous security measures for the President’s inauguration.

“Independence Square has been closed for several days by police and military, both for security reasons and to avoid any type of social unrest.”

Around 2,500 guests are expected to attend, including international representatives, heads of state and government. Access to the area is severely restricted, with vehicle traffic blocked and the erection of tents for the ceremony already completed.

“The scene is dominated by a strong police and military apparatus, forming a security cordon around the inauguration site. This context reflects the climate of tension that exists in Maputo.”
