President Joe Biden declared, this Monday (13), that he believes history will justify his decisions regarding the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan – even if this deadly and disorganized withdrawal threatens to tarnish his foreign policy record.
“When I took office, I had a choice. I saw no reason to keep thousands of troops in Afghanistan,” said the president in statements at the State Department.
Biden said he regrets all American troops killed in Afghanistan, including those in the 2021 withdrawal.
“Remember, critics said that if we ended the war, it would harm our alliances and create threats to our homeland from foreign-directed terrorism from a safe haven in Afghanistan. Neither occurred. Neither occurred. Wow,” he added.
By ending the war, Biden said, the country “was able to focus our energy and resources on more pressing challenges.”
“For all these reasons, ending the war was the right thing to do,” reflected the president. “And I believe history will reflect that.”
