The parrot is said to like to “parrot”. So how can you talk your exotic feathered friend (at least a little)?
If you want a talking parrot, you should choose a race that is close to this skill. For example, experts recommend the African gray parrot (also known as Žako), which is one of the biggest talkers. The Amazon parrot, the cockatoo, the Quaker monk or the Senegalese parrot are said to have tendencies to “parroting”. Each of this bird group excels in copying sounds (human speech) or excessive intelligence or docility. Take advantage of this and teach your bird lover a few words that he will parrot after you. How to do it?

Establish a close relationship
Yes, most parrots like to imitate the sounds of the environment. “But if you want to talk to your pet, you must first establish a closer relationship with him,” says the expert, adding that you should spend at least an hour a day with your pet. If you have the opportunity to be with him longer, it is only for the good! Moments together are important, especially at the beginning of breeding, so that the bird becomes emotionally attached to you.
Start with simple words
Begin the first lesson of “human speech” with a simple word or phrase that you will say to the parrot every day. “It can be words like ‘Hello’, ‘How are you?'” recommends the expert, adding that during “teaching” it is important that the parrot has eye contact with you and is close to your mouth. “Repeat the chosen word or phrase over and over again. Try to be understandable,” advises the expert, adding that training should not be longer than five minutes, otherwise the parrot will get tired and lose interest.
Connect learning to subjects
“Every time you want your parrot to repeat a word or phrase, associate it with a movement. For example, offer him a nut and repeat “nut” clearly and distinctly. The bird will associate the word with the experience and will remember it better,” says the expert.
Always study at the same time
Parrots are habituated. Therefore, try to always plan your language lesson so that you have it at the same time every day. Your exotic companion will remember this routine and adopt it as their own. The parrot will enjoy repeating new words regularly and will learn them more easily.
Give rewards
The same applies to birds as to dogs – they must be rewarded for good performance! Therefore, do not forget to reward your “partner” for every successful attempt. The treat then becomes a better motivation to perform. “Remember that birds have emotions, just like people. They can be subject to different states and moods, so be patient when teaching and try not to push the parrot unnecessarily. Learning human language should be fun for both of you,” adds the expert.
