Tuesday’s unannounced visit was his first solo engagement of the year, at a time when royals continue to gradually return to their public roles
The Princess of Wales announced this Tuesday that she is in remission. Kate Middleton used social media to make the announcement and said she felt “relieved”. Soon after, she went to the hospital where she was treated for an unspecified cancer to become her patron.
“It’s a relief to be in remission now and I’m still focused on recovery. As anyone who’s ever been diagnosed with cancer knows, it takes time to adapt to a new normal. However, I’m looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead. lots to look forward to.
Catherine, Princess of Wales, also made a deeply personal commitment on Tuesday, visiting the London hospital where she underwent cancer treatment to express her gratitude to the staff who have supported her over the past year.
The Princess of Wales made a moving visit to The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust in Chelsea, west London, where she met medical staff and spoke to patients currently undergoing treatment, Kensington Palace said.
The Palace also announced that Catherine will become patron of the specialist cancer center, along with her husband, Prince William.
Tuesday’s unannounced visit was his first solo engagement of the year, as royals continue to gradually return to public duties.
“The Princess wanted to make the trip to show her gratitude to the incredible staff, but also to highlight the excellent care and treatment that Marsden provides,” said a Kensington Palace spokesperson.
Kate took a break from public duties last year to undergo treatment for an unspecified cancer. In September, she announced she had finished chemotherapy and said she was “doing what I can to stay cancer free.”
Last week, Prince William praised his wife and mother of their three children as she celebrated her 43rd birthday, saying the “strength” she has shown over the past year has been “remarkable.”
The Royal Marsden was the world’s first hospital dedicated to cancer diagnosis, treatment, research and education when it opened in 1851. Today, the institution remains a world-leading cancer center.
Prince William has held the position of director of the hospital since 2007, a role that previously belonged to his late mother, Diana.
As Royal Patron, Kate will support the hospital’s work in promoting cancer research, treatment and care, as well as learning more about how it can benefit patients in the future.
“We are so lucky to have the support of royalty – it is inspiring for staff and patients and allows us to shine a light on the extraordinary work our staff do every day for patients and their families,” said Cally Palmer , executive director of the hospital.
