Lazio fired the club’s eagles coach this Monday (13), after the Italian press reported that the professional published images of the results of his penile implant on social media.
Juan Bernabé, the man responsible for raising the club’s eagle mascot before the start of matches, was fired after being informed of the photos and videos published by him.
Reuters reached out to Bernabé for comment on the situation, but has not yet received a response.
He is the trainer of Olympia, the bald eagle who adopted her in 2010. Olympia’s flight over Rome’s Olympic Stadium before matches has become a symbolic moment for fans.
Lazio regrets loss of Olympia eagle
The club said in a statement that they recognize that fans may be disappointed by Olympia’s absence from their home games.
“The club is aware of the pain that the absence of the eagle will cause fans, but it has become impossible to associate our historic symbol with such an individual,” the statement said.
In 2021, Bernabé had been suspended by Lazio after he was filmed at the stadium paying homage to Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.
