It may be surprising that an early music festival refers to Grantler Thomas Bernhard, which is made clear by the motto “Old Masters”. In truth, citing his novel of the same name, in which a certain Mr. Atzbacher meets a certain Mr. Reger in the Art History Museum to chat about European art, is not unreasonable. Music was essential for Bernhard, a passion that was never fulfilled but at least manifested itself in literature. Pianist Glenn Gould, for example, encouraged Bernhard to write his novel The perisher. In this respect, consistent, Bachs Goldberg Variations to be performed by Jean Rondeau.
