Minister Maria Elizabeth Rocha, who will assume the presidency of the criticized the president’s choices for the Judiciary, pointing out that the decisions have frustrated expectations of greater female representation. “It is extremely frustrating, sad and disappointing, because President Lula has not delivered to us, women, what he promised,” he said in an interview with the newspaper The Globe.
Maria Elizabeth is the only woman to be part of the STM since its creation in 1808. According to her, the judges have expressed resentment at the lack of progress in female inclusion “We will see what it will be like now with the next appointments for the STJ. All that is said is that they will be men, but I hope he surprises us”, he said.
Discontent is reinforced by the current composition of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), which has only one woman among the 11 members. Since Rosa Weber’s retirement, in September 2023, minister Cármen Lúcia has occupied this space alone. The choice of Flávio Dino to succeed Rosa Weber was criticized for ignoring requests from social movements that defended the appointment of a black woman.
For the minister, the exclusion of women in the Judiciary reflects a structural problem. “Because we think we’re in, but we’re really not. It is a false perception of reality”, he said. “I try to defend the voice of minorities, but not just women, since I am the only one of my gender (in the STM), I try to defend the voice of all people who are excluded in a society that is still a society of men, white, heterosexual and middle class. The Judiciary is mostly made up of this format of magistrates.”
