German Minister of Defense Boris On Tuesday, Pistorius assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Berlin would continue to support Kyiv even after the federal parliamentary elections on February 23. This was reported by the DPA agency, writes TASR.
Regardless of the form of the future German government, support will remain “reliable, firm and determined”. said Pistorius during a visit to the Ukrainian capital. According to him, the German elections will not change the fact that “a great European country is fighting for its survival, for its freedom”.
The minister expressed hope that Germany will find a way how to provide Ukraine with additional planned support worth three billion euros. Negotiations on this continue, as Germany does not have a proper budget approved for 2025 after the collapse of the governing coalition.
Zelenskyy once again thanked Berlin for military assistance so far, especially for air defense systems. According to him, Germany’s contributions represent approximately 16 percent of the total support for Ukraine.
Pistorius told DPA that he wanted a week with an unannounced visit to Kyiv before the inauguration of the newly elected US President Donald Trump, to send a signal that Germany, allies in Europe and NATO stand by Ukraine during the Russian invasion.
