Advantages of wood

Then there is a wooden and plastic cutting board. Which one is better? “A wooden cutting board is naturally antibacterial. Although it absorbs moisture or substances that may contain toxins, they will never survive in it for long. That’s why you don’t have to worry about contaminating the food when cutting,” says an expert who is a fan of wooden cutting boards. What about plastic? According to experts, it is light and washable, but it has its disadvantages. What kind?

The secret of plastic

Plastic cutting boards are light, washable and often colorful, so they will also decorate the kitchen. Of course, they have their downsides. What kind?

“Plastic is not porous, so it does not absorb moisture and bacteria. At first glance, this sounds like good news, but in reality it’s a problem,” says the expert, and continues: “You don’t wash off most bacteria (even in the dishwasher), so they willy-nilly stay on the surface. And what happens? You consume them together with food.” But that is not the only danger!

Slicing threat

A study published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology showed that frequent cutting causes microplastics to leak onto plastic cutting boards, which then “stick to the food” and thus become dangerous for all diners.

“Cut vegetables and meat came out the worst in the tests,” says the expert, adding that you should preferably throw away scratched plastic cutting boards immediately, as they can endanger your health. And if you’re going to buy new ones, better wood!
