Continente opened its new smart store last Friday, January 10th, in Leiria, considered the largest in the world in this segment. Continente Bom Dia Leiria São Romão uses artificial intelligence technology that allows customers to make their purchases without having to manually register the products.
This innovative project combines traditional experience with cutting-edge technology, through the smart checkout system, developed by Sensei. During purchases, products are automatically registered in a virtual cart, and the customer simply makes payment at the end, without needing to remove them from the bag.
The store, measuring more than 1200 square meters, represents an investment of six million euros, financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). The space operates in a hybrid format, allowing customers to choose between traditional payment methods, using two manual or six self-checkout boxes, and the innovative automatic system.
Despite modernity, areas such as fruits, vegetables and fish markets maintain manual interventions for weighing and personalized service, with direct integration into the virtual cart.
