Do you have back pain? Remember you only have one column and pay attention to these daily habits

The spine is one of the most important parts of our body, providing support and protection to the spinal cord. However, many everyday habits, often considered harmless, can be harmful to back health. Orthopedist Luiz Felipe Carvalho, cited by , highlights some of these behaviors, which can compromise the integrity of the spine without people realizing it.

One of the most common and harmful habits is spending long periods behind the wheel. According to the doctor, the static position associated with the constant vibration of the car can put excessive pressure on the intervertebral discs, resulting in back pain. Carvalho recommends that, on long trips, you take regular breaks for stretching and exercises to help relieve this pressure.

Another habit that can be harmful is frequent use of high heels. Although many people don’t realize it, this type of footwear alters the natural curvature of the spine, placing additional pressure on joints and discs. The orthopedist suggests giving preference to more comfortable shoes with lower heels to avoid prolonged impact on the back.

The use of heavy backpacks or wallets is also a concern. Carrying weight unevenly, such as carrying your backpack or wallet on one shoulder, can cause imbalance and tension in your back muscles. To avoid problems, the professional advises distributing the weight evenly or opting for backpacks with wide, padded straps, or even wheeled backpacks, which do not put extra strain on the spine.

Sleeping in hammocks, although it can be a relaxing experience, can also affect the posture of the spine during sleep, especially if it is not done moderately and carefully. For those who already have back problems, this type of rest can be uncomfortable. Excessive use of cell phones is another harmful habit, especially for children and adolescents. Staying for long periods with your head bent over the device can result in overload on the cervical spine. Carvalho suggests keeping your cell phone at eye level and taking frequent breaks to stretch your neck and back.

Lastly, crossing your legs, despite being a comfortable position for many people, can affect spinal alignment when held for long periods. The orthopedist recommends avoiding this position and keeping your feet flat on the floor or on a suitable support to ensure correct posture.
