The atmosphere in the corridors of the City Council, still emptied by the recess, is one of apprehension due to the entry of a group of councilors who promise to be louder in their speeches, after one already marked by the exchange of shouts of “thief” and “no amnesty” in the plenary.
The greater polarization worries parliamentarians from different political spectrums, especially the more moderate ones who have been in the House for a while. The expectation is for a more unpredictable legislature than the last one, with the mayor’s base ().
“Polarization will increase a lot and we will have a lot of fights in the plenary discussing what is not relevant. The shouting does not contribute anything to what really matters, which are the city’s real problems: health, education, security”, says, re-elected for a second term.
At the end of last year, for example, the agenda was held up for weeks, without a vote in plenary, due to discussions about religious racism.
The new group of influencers considered the loudest includes Lucas Pavanato (), the Cuban woman, the journalist and ex-BBB member, the former state deputy and the military police officer, elected with the help of Pablo Marçal (PRTB).
Amanda Vettorazzo (União), leader of the MBL (Movimento Brasil Livre), is also frequently mentioned among the group, despite saying that and promising consideration. They join Bolsonaro councilors already in office Sonaira Fernandes (PL) and Rubinho Nunes (União).
On the other side are Luana Alves (PSOL), and Luna Zarattini (), who is also seen as having a more combative profile. “This will be a more unstable legislature”, predicts she, who took over Eduardo Suplicy’s seat in 2023 and will now be party leader in place of Senival Moura.
Adrilles Jorge does not think that arguing harms the debate: “A passionate debate does not mean a low-quality debate”, he says. “You have a tyranny, a persecution [à direita] in the country and is exposing this in a visceral and passionate way. The duty of every parliamentarian, as the name suggests, is to ‘parlar’, to speak.”
Lucas Pavanato states that “one thing is the noise from the plenary, another thing is the flow of the House’s operations. The great demands for the city to function, which will come from the city hall, will continue”. According to him, the agendas that could stop the Chamber are among this new right that has entered.
Councilors will meet again on February 4th.
