The Faro Official Animal Collection Center (CROAF) celebrates its second anniversary this Thursday, January 16th. Since its inauguration, CROAF has welcomed 1,551 animals, including 831 stray cats through the CED Program (Capture-Sterilization-Return), promoted by Faro City Hall. In addition to these, the center’s veterinary team sterilized another 288 collected animals, totaling 1,119 sterilizations in two years of activity.
During this period, CROAF returned 125 lost animals to their families and promoted the responsible adoption of 333 animals. Also noteworthy is the reduction in the number of stray animals collected, which decreased from 223 in 2023 to 150 in 2024, a result of the work to collect animals and the awareness of the Farense community regarding non-abandonment and conscious adoption.
With the aim of reinforcing its social responsibility and getting closer to the community, the Municipality of Faro launched the “Faro Integra” project. This initiative allows students and users from various institutions, schools and homes in the municipality to visit CROAF, learning about responsible adoption and care for companion animals. Started in 2024, the project has already impacted hundreds of young people and seniors.
Still in 2024, the city hall established a protocol with Apatris XXI to promote the professional integration of its users and implemented the Cat Colony Caregiver Regulation, recognizing and supporting the work of caregivers in the municipality.
For 2025, the aim is to continue the work developed and reinforce support for families in need with companion animals, contributing to the food and care necessary for the well-being of their animals.
