The first inspection of the national plan scheduled for this year began yesterday. In total there will be 11 campaigns where one of the purposes is to raise awareness among drivers about priority topics such as alcohol or cell phones.
In the first days of the year, authorities return to the streets. It was like this in Batalha, where the first inspection action of the year was carried out this week. Caught by surprise are the drivers who were inspected here, but not only that.
In addition to normal inspection, the objective here is to raise awareness among drivers, especially with regard to distractions.
“The number of distraction-related accidents is very high. For example, in the case of the Leiria district, the idea is that of the accidents caused, 9% were due to distraction”, says Paulo Simões Ribeiro, Secretary of State for civil protection.
A significant number, but according to the latest data collected, it is decreasing. Authorities and the Government are now joining forces to avoid using cell phones while driving. There will be 11 operations of this type across the country throughout the year.
