From this Wednesday (15th) the functions of rector and vice-rector of the Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp) will be performed by the professor Maysa Furlanfrom the Chemistry Institute (IQ) on the Araraquara campus, and by professor Cesar Martins, from the Biosciences Institute (IBB) on the Botucatu campus. THE management runs until 2028.
Maysa Furlan is the third consecutive leader graduated from her own. She will still be the 13th person to occupy the role of rector with a mandate, the 11th in the period called “democratic Unesp”following the political reopening of the mid-1980s.
In addition to being vice-rector in the current administration (2021-2024), she has held other positions in the central administration of Unesp and is recognized in her field: full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) and the Academy of Sciences of the State of São Paulo. Paulo (Aciesp).
In 2021, he received the Simão Mathias Medal from the Brazilian Chemical Society for his contribution to the development of the area.
“He will lead the Universidade Estadual Paulista in what can be called the symbolic ‘maturity’ of the institution, its fiftieth anniversary, which will take place in January of next year. By convention, upon turning 50 years old, a university is no longer considered ‘young’ for classification purposes in those who make lists of this nature around the world”, said Unesp.
The vice-rector, Cesar Martins, was director of the Biosciences Institute on the Botucatu campus (IBB) for four years. In January 2021, he assumed the role of chief of staff at the rectory. He was previously director-president of the Biosciences Institute Foundation (FundBio) and has academic experience in the areas of Genomic and Chromosomal Evolution and Scientific Dissemination.

Unesp has 34 university units, spread across 24 campuses, 22 of which are in the interior of the state, one on the coast and one in the capital, which also houses the rectory. According to Unesp, the 2025 budget is R$4.69 billion, with R$4.26 billion (or 90.83%) coming from the institution’s ICMS share (2.3447%).
Public and freethe Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho has 31.4 thousand students enrolled in 136 undergraduate courses and 12.7 thousand students linked to 139 stricto sensu postgraduate programs, according to January data from Somos Unesp.
According to a recent survey presented by Capes, the Universidade Estadual Paulista is the second in the country in terms of scientific production, taking into account the Web of Science/Clarivate database of scientific journals.
