“The athlete and the FAP were notified, in 2024, of the pendency of a process initiated by the EHF anti-doping unit, related to alleged violations of doping rules by the athlete, following a control carried out within the scope of the work of the national team A”, says FAP, in a statement.

In the document, the organization says that Miguel Martins presented his defense, with the support of FAP, which assures that it was not aware of any developments in the process until Tuesday.

“Yesterday [na terça-feira] the athlete and the FAP were notified of the preventive suspension of the athlete, with immediate effect, from any and all activities within the sport, which includes carrying out training or official activities, whether in their club, or in particular in the national team, where is integrated and with a view to participating in the World Handball Championship”, he explains.

Thus, the 27-year-old defender, who plays for Danish side Aalborg, will miss the World Cup, which started on Tuesday and the Portuguese team’s debut game against the United States is scheduled for this Wednesday, at 6 pm: 00 locations (17:00 in Lisbon).

Athlete “shocked” by suspension

Miguel Martins said this Wednesday that he was “deeply shocked by this information”, defending his innocence.

The experienced central defender for the national team and for Danish side Aalborg mentions on his Instagram account that he will do everything in his power to prove that he has always acted in accordance with the values ​​of the sport.

“Unfortunately, I have to inform you that: Yesterday, I was notified about a sample I provided as part of a drug test that contained a banned substance and that I am provisionally suspended from January 14, 2025,” reads the message addressed to fans and to the handball community.

The central defender justifies his absence from the World Cup with the suspension he received and appeals for everyone’s understanding “as he cannot make any further statements on this matter”.

Miguel Martins asks for a second test

Miguel Martins’ suspension has already been confirmed by Aalborg, who are also shocked by the news. The Danish club says it has contacted the Portuguese player, who told them he was as confused as the club and who insists he had not done anything illegal.

The Danish director adds that the club will not be able to do anything further in this matter until the counter-analysis is available.
