On January 13, 35 high school students and 22 teachers met with President Peter Pellegrini and Minister of Education Tomáš Drucker in the presidential palace. However, during the acceptance of awards for participation in the international Olympics, 19-year-old student Simon refused to shake hands with the president. Why the young man decided on this gesture he explained to .

I have a personal and political problem with President Pellegrini because, in my opinion, he got into the palace by cheating and lying to the people. In addition to the evergreen populist promises of cheap food and cheap gas that populists repeat every election, he also accused his opponent of sending us to war in Ukraine. He would never send us there, and even if he did, there would be no rational reason for it“, he said critical words about the Slovak president.

Simon is on the side of the unsuccessful presidential candidate Ivan Korčok. “It was a lie and an attack on the lowest human instincts of fear and, in some parts of the Slovak population, possibly anti-Ukrainian feelings. And I don’t think it would be right to shake hands with such a person, or associate with him, because I strongly disagree with him and think he is a fraud and a liar,” he explained his gesture.

According to him, the state did not support them during the representation. “If we take it from the point of view of education and subject olympiads, I feel that the support is low. When we were at the Olympics in Hungary, there were six of us in the team and half of us wore one type of T-shirt and the other half wore another. We couldn’t even take a proper team photo together in team colors. When we went out with the Czech team and had to pay in cash, they invited us because they received envelopes full of forints for the stay. We did not receive any such support“, he revealed.

“You can see that there is room for improvement. All national rounds of the Mathematical Olympiad were moved to Bratislava, although they used to alternate between regional cities. This happened because of logistical problems, since most of the participants are from Bratislava anyway – and that saves the most money, because we really don’t have money for this either. I think that instead of hotels in Hanoi, some money could be invested here, in things like that. As an Olympian and a person on campus, I feel neglected because this country is not thinking about its future and just keeps spinning in the spiral of the past“, the student did not spare critical words.

President Peter Pellegrini responded to this inconvenience. “Well, of course, it happens that the young man may have taken it a little differently, maybe he didn’t notice what the meeting was leading to and what its tone was, which was purely apolitical and, on the contrary, should have been an expression of gratitude and respect to all of them… I am sorry that it overshadowed the beautiful event, which is thanks, respect and highlighting of our top students and teachers who achieve international success“, said the head of state.
