The new rules are meant to ensure that China and others who seek to circumvent US laws and undermine US national security fail.
The United States on Wednesday unveiled more measures to tighten controls on exports of advanced semiconductors. Their goal is to prevent them from ending up in China, despite already existing restrictions. TASR informs about it based on the AFP report.
Difficulty accessing advanced technology
The move, part of a series of actions before President Joe Biden leaves office, comes days after US officials announced new restrictions on the export of artificial intelligence (AI) chips. Washington is trying to make it difficult for Beijing to access advanced technology because of concerns about its use for military purposes.
“These rules strengthen our controls to help ensure that China and others who seek to circumvent our laws and undermine US national security fail,” said Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondi.
In recent years, Washington has stepped up and expanded its efforts to restrict exports of state-of-the-art chips to China, but there are concerns that its restrictions are being circumvented.
The Biden administration added on Wednesday to the so-called blacklist of companies not to do business with 16 entities, including the Chinese company Sophgo. Its TSMC-made chip was illegally incorporated into Huawei’s AI processor.
