The worst drought in southern Africa in over 40 years – that is the sad conclusion to the little-noticed humanitarian crisis in Angola, where around 2.2 million people are affected by a precarious food situation. In the driest regions of the country of 37 million inhabitants, most water points are not even in operation and clean drinking water is in short supply. Women and girls, who are often the ones who fetch water, have to make long and dangerous journeys. In addition to widespread poverty and food crises, numerous refugees come from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that around 1.5 million people in Angola will need humanitarian assistance in 2025.
