A video published by the federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG)one of the main allies of the former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL)went viral on social media and, in just 24 hours, surpassed the 120 million views mark on Instagram.
In the recording, published on Tuesday (14), the deputy acknowledges that, but insinuates that the measure could be in the plans of the president’s government Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) further on. “No, Pix will not be taxed, but I don’t doubt that it could be”, says Nikolas.
The opposition parliamentarian suggests that the Federal Revenue would aim to collect Income Tax (IR) from people who move amounts whose origin has not been proven. The government rejects any link between Revenue controls and IR collection.

Nikolas Ferreira’s video went viral on social media in the last 24 hours. The deputy’s name is among the most talked about topics on X (formerly Twitter) and also appears on the list of most searched topics on Google Trends.
“The government wants to know how you earn R$5,000 and pay R$10,000 on your card, but it doesn’t want to know how a person who earns a minimum wage manages to survive paying for electricity, housing, education, monthly purchases and expenses”, says the deputy in the recording.

Nikolas is also ironic when he says that “love is costing too much” and that the government only thinks about collecting money, but offers nothing in return. “If we don’t stop Lula, he will stop Brazil”, adds the deputy.
Around 9 am this Wednesday (15), the video had already had 129 million reproductions on Nikolas’ Instagram profile, with 3.6 million likes and 224 thousand comments.
What were the changes made by the Revenue
In September last year, through a Normative Instruction (IN), the Federal Revenue Service announced changes to the process for monitoring financial transactions. Despite being published in 2024, the standard only came into force on January 1, 2025.

According to the IRS, in addition to “traditional financial institutions, entities such as credit card administrators and payment institutions must send information” through a specific communication tool, e-Financeira.
e-Financeira operates within the Public Digital Bookkeeping System (Sped), established in 2007 and which processes, for example, electronic invoices.
According to the text of the IN, global movements or balances, each month, by type of operation, will have to be reported to the Revenue when they exceed R$5 thousand (for individuals) and R$15 thousand (legal entities). Until then, the limits were less restrictive, at R$2,000 and R$5,000, respectively.

Since the changes came into force, the topic took over social media and was used by figures linked to the opposition to the Lula government, who accused the government of taxing transactions via Pix – which is false – and seeking to charge higher income tax. .
What the Revenue says
In a note released on January 8, the IRS clarified that there will be no tax charged for digital transfers. According to the body, the IN only reinforces supervision that already existed and aims to “offer better services to society”.
Also according to the IRS, the reinforcement in inspection does not violate laws that deal with banking and tax secrecy, as was also circulated on social media.

“The measure aims to better manage risks by the tax administration, from which it will be possible to offer better services to society, in absolute respect for the legal norms of banking and tax secrecy”, says the body.
According to the Revenue, e-Financeira does not identify the recipient of transfers from a person or company to third parties, via Pix or Available Electronic Transfer (TED). The system adds up all amounts left from the account, including withdrawals. If the limit of R$5,000 for individuals or R$15,000 for legal entities is exceeded, the financial institution will inform the Federal Revenue Service.

On January 9th, the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad (PT)published a video in which he refutes a series of fake news involving the supposed creation of new taxes and the taxation of Pix, among other topics.
“Guys, let’s pay attention. ‘Fake news’ is circulating that harms public debate, harms politics, and harms democracy. These things are circulating and people don’t always have time to check the information. These things are lies and, sometimes, they mix it with something that is true to confuse public opinion”, said Haddad, at the time.
The executive secretary of the department, Dario Durigannumber 2 of the Farm, .
Durigan explained that the new Federal Revenue rule was necessary to standardize the sending of transaction information by financial institutions, as some reported transactions with Pix, while others had doubts about the need to include the service in their financial statements.
Durigan also highlighted the importance of supervision in the fight against organized crime, highlighting that “the Revenue is largely responsible for subsidizing criminal authorities in the investigation of crimes”.
“Make and receive your Pix, the Federal Revenue Service does not want to harm anyone, on the contrary, it wants to protect Brazilian citizens”, he concluded.
