Brazil and Portugal face each other this Friday (17/01), at 2pm (Brasília time), in the second round of the group stage of the Men’s World Handball Championship. The game will be at the Unity Arena, in Norway.

In their debut in the tournament, Brazil beat Norway, the home team, 29 to 26. The highlights of the game were Habiel Langaro, with eight goals, and Hugo Bryan, with six goals.

Portugal also started the tournament on the right foot, beating the United States 30 to 21. The Portuguese highlights were Pedro Portella and Martim Costa, both with seven goals.

How does the Men’s World Handball Championship work?

32 teams are divided into eight groups of four teams. The top three in each group advance to the second phase, which will have four groups with six teams. The best two in each group go to the quarterfinals, where the knockout stage for the title begins.

Coach Marcos Tatá called up 18 athletes for the world tournament: two goalkeepers, three central defenders, six full-backs, four wingers and three pivots. Only four athletes play in Brazil. See the list:

Led by coach Marcos Tatá, the Brazil is part of Group E, which also has Portugal, Norway and the United States. The group’s headquarters city is Oslo, capital of Norway.

Brazil’s best position in the Men’s Handball World Cup came in 2019, when the team came in 9th place. In the last edition, in 2023, the Brazilians finished 17th. The goal for this year’s World Cup is to reach at least the quarterfinals.
