Councilor Helton Júnior () signed a draft legislative resolution to suspend what was authorized at the end of last year by the mayor of Fuad Noman (PSD), from the same party as the councilor.

The adjustment announced by municipal management came into effect at the beginning of 2025 and increased the conventional fare by 9.52%, from R$5.25 to the current R$5.75.

The councilor told the Panel that he does not see his decision to sign the measure, authored by councilor Vile Santos (PL), as a counterpoint to the city hall.

“I made it clear to the management actors that I am from the base, I want to help build the government, but I have very sensitive agendas and that I need to position myself freely”, stated the first-term councilor.

He also said that his position is not against the city hall, but against a contract that was signed in 2008 by another administration and against the companies.

“The current contract has many problems and has almost no margin to maneuver this tariff issue,” he said.

In addition to the adjustment, the municipality’s budget for next year also provides for R$518.2 million in subsidies for companies operating in the city. The city hall stated that, if it weren’t for this transfer, the ticket price would be R$9.40.

The contract was signed in 2008 with a duration of 20 years and, therefore, will be redesigned by the Fuad management – currently occupied by Álvaro Damião on an interim basis while Fuad is hospitalized. The topic accumulates complaints from users and marked last year’s municipal elections in the capital of Minas Gerais.
