Last Thursday, the 16th, the expectation was that Ricco buses, one of the main public transport companies in Rio Branco, would be paralyzed in a legitimate protest by employees, who face a situation of negligence on the part of the company. However, the strike was lifted after workers received their back wages, but outrage and discontent remain.
The reports from employees are alarming. In addition to the outstanding salaries, the employees’ meal vouchers were also irregular, and the Service Time Guarantee Fund (FGTS) was not being deposited. This combination of financial problems generated a wave of dissatisfaction that culminated in a significant strike. The previous Monday, 70% of the company’s activities were interrupted, which caused inconvenience to the population, who were forced to use app-based cars to get around.
Public transport companies, such as Ricco, have made exorbitant profits over the years, but continue to offer buses that are mostly old and in poor condition. While profits grow, the reality for employees is one of penury.
The strike, which began at 8 am last Monday, was only ended after the workers were called to a meeting with the company. The agreement that was reached, although it brought momentary relief, does not erase the concern about Ricco’s lack of commitment to honoring its obligations to employees. The situation exposes a lack of respect that cannot be ignored, reflecting a culture of devaluing work and people who, on a daily basis, dedicate themselves to maintaining the city’s mobility.
Ricco workers play a crucial role in society, ensuring that thousands of people can travel in search of work, study and other essential activities. However, the lack of investment in decent working conditions and the absence of fair and respectful treatment by the company put not only the livelihood of employees at risk, but also the quality of the service provided to the population.
It is essential that society, competent bodies and public transport users themselves mobilize in support of workers, demanding a more responsible stance from Ricco. The appreciation of professionals who work on buses must be a priority, not only for ethical reasons, but also because of the direct impact this has on the lives of all citizens of Rio Branco.
The situation of Ricco employees is a warning about the need for fairer and more effective policies in the public transport sector, which guarantee not only the continuity of the service, but also the respect and dignity of the workers who make it work.
