GNR's SOS Ambiente Line has never received so many complaints

In 2024, SEPNA, the GNR unit for nature and environmental protection, received more than 12,500 complaints. Most related to companion animals and forest fires.

In 2024, the GNR received more than 12,500 complaints related to environmental infractions. This is the highest number ever and most are related to companion animals and wildfires.

“Since 2002, [a linha SOS Ambiente] began to receive the necessary complaints from citizens and has been increasing exponentially every year (…). It started with around a thousand and a few infractions in 2002 (…). We already have around 12,500 this year”, reveals Lieutenant Colonel Fernando Lopes.

The majority of complaints are related to companion animalsincluding abuse and abandonment, followed by forest fires.

“More and more people are aware of this type of problem and more and more are reporting it, which is why [as queixas] have increased”, adds the lieutenant colonel.

Including the complaints, the GNR received more than 42 thousand contacts through – 808 200 520.

“The line is not only used to make complaints, it is also used to give people advice and answer questions regarding environmental and nature issues.”

Over the last 23 years, the GNR has recorded more than 150,000 complaints and almost 400,000 contacts.
