Many people may avoid ventilating their home in winter for fear of higher heating bills or reluctance to cool the rooms. However, the rooms should be ventilated even when we see white fluff outside the windows. Contrary to appearances, ventilation during the autumn and winter months has a great impact on health. How to ventilate your apartments? When to open the windows?
Ideally, the premises should be ventilated several times a day, in winter at least once a day, at most once every two days, to get fresh air into the house – but during the heating season it is sometimes very difficult, especially in larger cities. That’s why recommends doing it at certain times.
Why should it be ventilated in winter?
- Inadequate ventilation causes the air to be polluted – is still the same, and this promotes many health problems.
- Various microorganisms that affect the organism develop more easily in such air – they can weaken it, and this, especially in winter, leads to more frequent infections. In addition, polluted air can cause headaches and reduced concentration.
- Poor quality air also causes drying of the skin and irritates the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and throat. Staying in such conditions (for a long time) can even lead to the emergence of so-called sick buildings syndrome. It is a disease caused by polluted air; its symptoms resemble the flu and negatively affect the immune system.
- In addition, insufficient air circulation also affects the condition of the home – the lack of such “exchange” can result in higher humidity in interiors, and this leads, among other things, to the formation of molds, which also negatively affect the organism, including the respiratory system.
How to ventilate your apartment in winter?
- The most important rule is that we should not cool the apartment – there is no need to open the windows for an hour or two. It only takes 5 to 10 minutes to not get rid of the heat from the rooms (no increase in heating bills) and at the same time to remove polluted air and let in fresh air from outside.
- It is best to ventilate the rooms separately. Start by opening the windows – it is good to do it widely so that the room is ventilated more quickly. Then close the room, wait a few minutes and complete the ventilation. You won’t lose too much heat with short and intense ventilation.
- In addition, it is a good idea to turn off the heating a few minutes before opening the windows in winter – this will also help reduce energy losses.
When to ventilate the apartment in winter?
During the heating season, the air quality is much worse. In smaller cities, it will be easier to ventilate the rooms. In general, the best air quality should be in the morning and evening.
It is recommended to open the windows before 10 o’clock and you can do so after waking up, for example at 6 or 7 o’clock in the morning. The outdoor air should also be cleaner in the late evening hours – roughly after 10:00 p.m. However, it can be later in big cities.
If there are problems with air quality in the city, it is worth checking the applications that show the current state of the air and adjust the time when we ventilate the rooms accordingly. It is important not to open the windows when the air quality is bad or there is smog.
