The newspaper also praised Fernanda Torres’ performance: “Magnetic look”. The film opens this Friday (17th January) in the United States
The North American newspaper praised the Brazilian film “I’m Still Here” in an analysis published this Thursday (16 January 2025). According to film critic Alissa Wilkinson, the feature film directed by Walter Salles is “beautiful and devastating”in addition to “expertly crafted and richly filmed”.
The New York Times also commented on Fernanda Torres’ performance, stating that the actress “doubles his performance with all these emotions and his inquisitive eyes are magnetic”. “I’m Still Here” premieres this Friday (17th January) in North American cinemas.
Fernanda Torres won the Golden Globe for Best Drama Actress on January 5, becoming the first Brazilian actress to win the award. She is now seeking an Oscar nomination, which will be finalized on the 23rd. The ceremony is scheduled for March 2nd.
“’I’m Still Here’ is also a moving portrait of how politics disrupts and reshapes the domestic environment, and how solidarity, community and love are the only viable way to live through tragedy. And it warns us to be suspicious of anyone who tries to erase or rewrite the past.”says the New York Times.
I’M STILL HERE
“I’m Still Here” is based on the book of the same name by Marcelo Rubens Paiva. It tells the story of his mother, Eunice, after the disappearance, in 1971, of the writer’s father, the impeached deputy Rubens Paiva (1929-1971), during the Brazilian military dictatorship. The film was watched by around 3.3 million spectators in Brazilian cinemas, being the biggest premiere of a national film since the Covid-19 pandemic.
