President of Saltur, Isaac Edington celebrated the success of the Sacred Race, an event that precedes the Lavagem do Bonfim procession. The race brought together 1,500 Bahian, Brazilian and foreign athletes this Thursday morning (16), on a 6.8 km route. The number of runners was almost double compared to last year’s edition.
“This year, we had the Sacred Race with the largest number of participants. We have been strengthening this sporting calendar and it has all the potential to become our São Silvestre. I think it is an important race for this calendar (…) We had 1.5 thousand participants and I think that, if we had opened 3 thousand registrations, we would have 3 thousand participants”, he stated.
The race started at the Basilica of Conceição da Praia, in Comércio, and finished at Colina Sagrada, next to the Basilica Santuário Senhor do Bonfim. Last year, 862 competitors completed the course, according to the Bahian Athletics Federation.
Isaac Edington also evaluated Lavagem do Bonfim, which he called the third busiest tourist product in the capital of Bahia.
“This is an initiative that, today, we consider as the city’s third product. It is an event that we have been investing in every year, especially in promoting the city. We should have an audience of more than 1 million people participating in this year. It’s an event that occupies the city’s hotel chain”, he commented.
The president of Saltur also emphasized the expectation for the Festa de Iemanjá, on February 2nd, as well as the 2025 calendar as a whole.
