Maintaining an updated fleet is essential for maintain some naval superiority in a conflict and achieve strategic deterrence ,both when carrying out surprise offensives and cutting off logistical routes. In this context, Russia, which faces various international sanctions, has decided to expand its military arsenal and has delivered an Arkhangelsk nuclear submarine to its Navy, in a ceremony held at the Sevmash shipyards.

The event, which was held after the launching of the submarine, was attended by various senior representatives and military leaders of the Russian Ministry of Defense. The commander-in-chief of the Russian Navy, Alexander Moiseyev, stated that the construction of these submarines will continue in the coming years. “Four new nuclear-powered multipurpose submarines – Perm, Ulyanovsk, Voronezh and Vladivostok – will soon join our fleet,” Moiseyev stressed.

The submarines will be transferred to the naval base of Zapadnaya Litsa, located in the extreme north of Russia, close to Norway. This base is considered one of the most important in the Russian Northern Fleet. “The Yasen-M class submarines are an invaluable contribution to global and regional security, allowing us to face challenges in any scenario,” Moiseyev finally highlighted.

Technical characteristics of the Arkhangelsk (Archangel) submarine

This is the third serial ship of the Yasen-M line. It can reach depths of up to 600 meters and carry out missions Up to 100 days long without having to surface. It includes a Vertical Launch System (VLS) that can launch up to 32 Zircon hypersonic missiles, Kalibr-PL cruise missiles, or Oniks anti-ship missiles. In addition, it has a Snoop Pair surface search radar and advanced sensors.

One of its advantages is its low noise emission, which allows it to go almost unnoticed by enemy radars. In addition, it has an advanced nuclear reactor 43,000 horsepower which allows it to function practically without autonomy limitations.
