TAP started to “surcharge” passengers up to 24 euros to compensate for the green transition

New fee applies to all TAP flights departing from European airports, with one exception: domestic flights between destinations in Portugal.

TAP Air Portugal started to charge, from January 2nd, a surcharge to passengers to cover the costs of switching to a more environmentally friendly fuel.

The additional environmental fee will offset the “increasingly higher” expenses related to the transition to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)“a sustainable aviation fuel that can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 80% over the fuel’s life cycle, compared to conventional aviation fuel (paraffin, of fossil origin)”, which now begins to compose at least 2% of the airline’s fuel, in accordance with European regulations.

The new fee applies to all TAP flights departing from airports in EU countries, Switzerland, Great Britain and Norway, with one exception: domestic flights between destinations in Portugal. Naturally, tickets for babies who do not occupy a seat are also excluded.

According to the company at the end of December, the new rate varies between two and 24 euros. “The surcharge will be applied per flight segment, according to the destination and class of service”, explains TAP.

In Europe and North Africa, the fee starts at two euros (for economy class flights) and extends to 4 euros for those traveling in business class. For West Africa and the Middle East, it is 6 and 12 euros and for the USA, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Mozambique and Angola, 12 and 24 euros, again, depending on the flight class.

Thus, anyone going on holiday from Lisbon to New York (USA), for example, pays 14 euros in environmental fees traveling with TAP in economy class: two euros to go and another 12 euros to return.
