After Porto, it is Lisbon’s turn to open metro stations to welcome the homeless during this cold weekend.
The Lisbon Metropolitano will open its stations Santa Apolonia, Oriente and Rossio at night, this weekend, to allow homeless people to stay there overnight, due to the cold.
The announcement was made this Friday, in a statement, in which the carrier says that the three stations will remain open in the early hours of Friday to Saturday and in the early hours of Saturday to Sunday.
The Santa Apolônia station will be open at the entrance to the north zone, on the promenade next to the station building. In the East, entry is through the gate on the side Shuffleboard/shopping center. In Rossio, you can enter through the gate Figueira Square.
The carrier said that additionally, the distribution of ‘Metro kits’, consisting of a blanket and a hatat the indicated stations, in order to provide greater comfort to station users at night.
The Metropolitano de Lisboa also says that, in conjunction with the Municipal Police, it will reinforce surveillance and cleaning actions at stations that will remain open.
“The Metropolitano de Lisboa, in close coordination with the Lisbon City Council, is developing a set of measures designed to ensure compliance with the Contingency Plan for homeless people, in response to extreme cold conditions that are currently being felt in the city of Lisbon”, says the note.
This week, the Porto Metro also went ahead with an identical initiative, opening the city’s railway stations to the homeless. Casa da Música e do Campo 24 de Agostoon the cold nights of Tuesday and Wednesday (January 14th and 15th).
