Denis Law, Manchester United legend and Ballon d’Or winner, dies

Denis Law, former Manchester United and Scotland striker, has died aged 84. The information was released by the English club this Friday (17).

“It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a difficult battle, but is finally at peace,” said a family statement shared by United.

“We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to her well-being and care, in the past and more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made a difference. Thanks”.

Career

Law began his career at Huddersfield Town, but made his name at the club where he spent 11 years of his life, winning the league title in 1965. e 1967, and the European Cup in 1968.

He scored 237 goals in 404 games for United, becoming the third highest scorer in the team’s history, behind Wayne Rooney (253) and Bobby Charlton (249).

Law, known as “The King”, became the only Scot to win the European Footballer of the Year award, winning both honors in 1964.

The former Manchester City and Torino player remains Scotland’s all-time greatest with 30 goals in 55 appearances after making his international debut in 1958 at the age of 18.

The Scot was the last living member of the “sacred triad”, alongside George Best and Bobby Charlton.

“Everyone at Manchester United is mourning the loss of Denis Law, the King of the Stretford End, who has passed away aged 84,” United added in a statement. “He will always be celebrated as one of the club’s greatest and most loved players. The supreme goalscorer, his talent, spirit and love of the game made him the hero of a generation. Our deepest condolences go out to Denis’ family and friends. His memory will live forever”, concluded the club.
